Phyllis Adams: Capturing Coastal New England Through Color and Shape
Phyllis Adams is a New England-based artist whose work captures the natural beauty of coastal landscapes through a unique blend of realism and abstraction. Born in Boston and one of nine children, Phyllis spent her summers in the picturesque town of Westport, Massachusetts—a place she now calls home and a constant source of inspiration.
Though her passion for art was always present, Phyllis initially pursued a career as a computer software manager while raising her three sons. Eventually, she returned to her artistic roots, dedicating herself full-time to painting. Her work is characterized by a vibrant use of color and shape, which she describes as her artistic language to convey the mood, feeling, and impression of her subjects. Balancing the edges of realism and abstraction, she creates paintings that invite viewers to experience both the tangible beauty of nature and its emotional resonance.
Phyllis’ talent and distinct style have earned her notable commissions from esteemed institutions such as Boston Children’s Hospital, Women & Infants Hospital in Providence, RI, and Yale Women’s Health Center in New Haven, CT—testaments to her ability to create art that brings both serenity and inspiration.
When not painting in her studio, Phyllis enjoys taking her small Boston Whaler out on the Westport River, often accompanied by her dogs. “I pull up to a sandbar and set up my easel—taking a dip now and then—combining my two favorite activities, painting and swimming,” she says. Through her work, Phyllis Adams continues to share her deep connection to the coastal landscapes of New England, offering viewers a glimpse into the natural beauty that has shaped her life and art.
